How can your Diet help you Sleep?
Do you remember the last time you ‘slept like a baby?’ How often do you mean to get to bed earlier only to find you ‘can’t switch off’ or you get caught up in something on TV, or you’re still rushing round catching up on things you didn’t get done in the day?
There are many things that influence the amount and quality of sleep we get. Our busy lives often mean we can find relaxing and winding down at the end of the day hard. Insufficient and poor quality sleep has been proven to have major negative impacts on our health and can lead to chronic health problems such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and obesity.
Only in today’s health news was there a report on the effects of bad sleep and how this effects our waistline
So, how can what we eat help us get quality sleep?
Foods such as bananas, seeds, fish, eggs, oats and nuts contain an essential fatty acid known as tryptophan. Tryptophan helps our bodies make the feel good neurotransmitter called serotonin which relaxes us and improves our mood, it can also help us sleep.
Eating foods throughout the day that are rich in tryptophan will allow us to sleep faster and get a better nights’ sleep. This recipe includes both salmon and eggs which are both rich in tryptophan and will help you get a great nights’ sleep
A good quality sleep pattern can take time to establish. Be patient, be kind to yourself, be consistent, and as always don’t give up!
